Tax professionals across the country endured a unique set of challenges during filing season in 2020. Normally, preparers worry about things like last-minute changes in tax law, seasonal staff, and procrastinating clients, but a once-in-a-century pandemic added state-mandated social distancing protocols, office PPE supplies, telework, and Economic Impact Payments to an already long list.

The Internal Revenue Service-issued filing season statistics—which run through November 20, 2020—seem to indicate an increasing reliance on electronic filing in a year characterized by local and state-wide shutdowns. Download the Drake Software 2020 Filing Season Statistics Infographic for a quick snapshot of how simple returns from non-filers, direct deposited refunds, e-filing, and more changed last year.

Ryan Norton

Whether designing superheroes, penciling caricatures, or just doodling, I always knew I was going to earn some sort of art degree while in college. That was my goal before I decided to trade Edgar Degas for Edgar Allan Poe during a Freshman English class. The BA in English soon morphed into a double-major in English and Philosophy, eventually becoming an MA in English. It only makes sense that I learned of a writing opportunity for a local marketing firm while teaching a first-year college English course. Before I knew it, I was writing and editing tax-related articles for Taxing Subjects, and this has been my home since 2014.
