IRS Plans “Soft Touch” Compliance Checks
Approximately 5,000 tax practitioners will soon receive a letter from the IRS, reminding them of their obligation to file accurate returns. This is part of the “soft touch” approach the IRS Return Preparer Office plans to use to contact preparers and remind them of their compliance requirements. Another “soft touch” approach will be visits by revenue agents, and some of the preparers who receive this compliance reminder will also be visited by revenue agents who will remind them of the tax laws and their responsibility to their clients. Once these visits are complete, the IRS will then check to see if these “soft touch” approaches had any impact on recent trends.
